Woven In Solitude
Date: March 2020
Length: 6'30"
Medium: Stereo Sound Recording
Composition: Zela Papageorgiou
Performance: Zela Papageorgiou and Hamish Upton
Sound Engineer: Tilman Robinson
Instrumentation: Vibraphone, cardboard cones, yarn, plastic rods, bobbins, acetate
Woven In Solitude is a musical response to the textures and colours in the ATW’s latest Embassy Tapestry, The Royal Harvest by Kaantju/Umpilaartist Naomi Hobson.
In this work, various materials borrowed from the ATW are used to play the vibraphone. close-mic recordings were taken of each sound to capture these delicate textures and create a sense of fragility. These clips were then arranged and layered to produce a narrative that illustrates the intimacy that we experience with ourselves through creative practise.
Bergamot Rind
Date: February 2020
Medium: Stereo Sound Recording
Length: 1'45" & 1'55"
Composition and Performance: Zela Papageorgiou
Sound Engineer: Tilman Robinson
Instrumentation: 2 tom toms and 1 djembe, brush sticks and bamboo sticks
The Rhythmic material in Bergamot Rind has been generated from a transcription process that converts image into rhythm. To develop this method of transcription, Zela observed the process of preparing a tapestry prior to weaving, focusing on the steps of transferring the cartoon (stencil) of the image onto the warp.
The first movement uses specific percussive techniques with brushes on the drums to mimic the sounds of the loom being warped up. The second movement focuses purely on the rhythmic content, honouring both moments of sound and silence.
Softness
Date: March 2020
Medium: Stereo Sound Recording
Length: 5'
Composition: Zela Papageorgiou
Performance: Zela Papageorgiou and Hamish Upton
Sound Engineer: Tilman Robinson
Instrumentation: Vibraphone, cardboard cones
Softness is also a musical response to The Royal Harvest. Unlike Woven In Solitude, this work is an entirely improvised response that was recorded in one single take.
