November Friday Night Social: Dark Matters

  • Science Gallery Melbourne, The University of Melbourne 114 Grattan Street Parkville, VIC, 3052 Australia (map)

Developed as part of artist Jon Butt’s work µ MUOGRAPHY for Science Gallery Melbourne’s exhibition DARK MATTERS, percussionists Kaylie Melville and Zela Papageorgiou will perform alongside two non-human performers: a muon particle detector and a newly cut vinyl record.

The record has been developed by Butt and Lewis Gittus during the Muon Open Studio for National Science week in response to a generative conversation around topics including particle physics, the agency of muons as interstellar messengers and deep space time. The particle detector detects and responds to muons travelling at over 299,762 km/second.

From Science Gallery Melbourne’s event page:
Through a special night of music and performance art, we are inviting you to traverse through the human soul and outer space to contemplate the sheer scale of the universe and how much of our own lives (floating alone in space on this tiny blue planet) remains a mystery to us. Soaring vocal performances, intergalactic records, abject horror and ethereal sounds will mix fear and wonder together in this existential experience that is like a variety show for aliens.

Participating artists: Lawrence Leung with Dom Chambers and Vyom Sharma, Jon Butt with Kaylie Melville, Zela Papageorgiou and Lewis Gittus, Speak Percussion with ten high schooler students, Sunny Kim with Rueben Lewis, András Cséfalvay, Desiree, with Lachy and Anthony.
