Naarm-based percussionists Zela Papageorgiou and Hamish Upton present the premiere of Shinrin-yoku, an imaginative work for percussion and electronics reflecting on their time exploring gardens and forests throughout Japan.
Experience a reflective work inspired by Japan’s natural environment in a deep-listening experience. Shinrin-yoku features field recordings captured by Papageorgiou and Upton during a recent visit to Japan, including the Alpine region of Nagano, paired with musical textures and melodies inspired by their personal experiences of forest-bathing. The musicians will evoke beautiful soundscapes blended with recordings of the Japanese forest, using a range of electro-acoustic and organic materials and drawing from their practices in experimental classical percussion.
Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) is the ecotherapy practice of ‘making contact with and taking in the atmosphere of the forest’ for human health and wellbeing. Like the practice of Shinrin-yoku, this performance is a chance to de-stress in a moment of nourishment, surrounded by the beautiful architecture of Tadao Ando and gardens.
